The listerCompass is a professional-grade stereographic compass designed specifically for structural geologists operating in the field. Its core functionality facilitates precise measurement of foliation and lineation orientations, with features that record this data seamlessly. The device supports dropping placemark pins onto digital maps, enabling effective recording of traverse information.

Engineered by a seasoned structural geologist, the compass incorporates practical considerations essential for fieldwork. It allows users to measure orientations even when positioned upside down beneath overhangs, addressing common challenging scenarios. Measurements of lineations and foliations can be taken independently or simultaneously, with simple tap gestures on the display to switch between modes. Additionally, it enables real-time entry of descriptive notes associated with each measurement.

Data export options are comprehensive, including formats compatible with geographic information systems. It generates KML files that can be easily imported into Google Earth for visual spatial analysis. Data can be recorded in multiple coordinate systems, such as UTM and latitude-longitude, with a double-tap on the screen toggling between views. Navigation among the main functions—compass view, data display, and map interface—is intuitive through straightforward toggles.

The device autosaves all data entries, ensuring information is retained without manual intervention. Exporting data is supported via email or transfer through iTunes, facilitating further analysis or record-keeping off-site.

Users can select from various data recording formats depending on their focus. For plane measurements, strike, dip, and rake are available alongside lineation parameters on planes; for line-focused studies, yaw, pitch, and roll can be used. Standardized formats such as dip–dipDirection and plunge–trend are also supported to emulate tools like the Breithaupt Compass or Brunton Compass, respectively. Annotations can be added to placemark pins or logged within the data records for contextual clarity.

Beyond measurement and recording, the listerCompass offers built-in options for statistical analysis of collected data, supporting more detailed structural interpretations.
